Ugg Boots History

Sheepskin ugg boots and slippers are an Australian icon.  They have been synonymous with the Australian culture for decades with their most prominent appearance in the 1960's and 1970's.  The term 'ugg' is considered generic by sheepskin footwear manufacturers in Australia.  Whilst there have been many ugg boot manufacturers come and go over the years, one of the longest surviving ones is Western Australian manufacturer Uggs-N-Rugs. They have been trading under their business name since the 1970's, manufacturing a line of top quality products.  

It was the surfing scene that brought about the revived awareness in ugg boots in the '60's.  Every surfer had to have a pair.  Those early designs were barely more than an oversized sheepskin slipper.  They were a boot with a soft sole done in a very plain design.

A very practical boot, true ugg boots are made of sheepskin with the fleece acting as a warm lining and the skin providing the external layer.  Being a soft leather, they stretch and of course the wool flattens with wear so it is important you obtain a nice snug pair. Some unscrupulous manufacturers are lining boots with wool and calling them sheepskin ugg boots. These are cheap to make and are sometimes sold at cheaper prices but they will not last as long because the wool wears away much more quickly. Make sure you buy boots where the skin and wool are one and them same - just different sides of the pelt.  All of Uggs-N-Rugs' sheepskin footwear use genuine sheepskin pelts.
